Musical Director

Matt Brown

With a keen interest in creating high quality music, I have dedicated my banding life to excellence both as a player and a conductor.

Following a short time as Solo Trombone with the world famous GUS Band and 2 years with Carlton Main Frickley Colliery, I am now proud to be part of the musical force of the Desford Colliery Band.

I enjoyed an extensive musical career in the British Army and was selected for the Bandmaster course at the Royal Military School of Music.

Following a highly successful career I decided to use my passion to develop the musical life of young people through education and gained a position as Head of Performing Arts.

I decided to step away from full time education to take my studies to the next level and have recently completed an MA in Music Performance at the University of Salford gaining a distinction. Having played in and conducted brass bands for 40 years, my recent banding experience follows intensive tuition at Salford University and I have played with Black Dyke, Leyland, Grimethorpe and Brighouse & Rastrick bands, as well as appearances with the world renowned Black Dyke Trombone Quartet.

Contest appearances include playing Solo Trombone at the British Open with Carlton Main Frickley, Desford and Milnrow and Hammonds where we also won the Grand Shield in 2018, as well as being the featured soloist for the band's appearance at the 2018 Brass in Concert. Further success came at the Yorkshire area with Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band gaining second place.
